Vampire Academy (2014)
Rose, a rebellious half-vampire/half-human guardian-in-training and her best friend, Lissa -- a mortal, royal vampire Princess - have been on the run when they are captured and returned to St. Vladamirs Academy, the very place where they believe their lives may be in most jeopardy. Rose will sacrifice everything to protect Lissa from those who intend to exploit her from within the Academy walls and the Strigoi (immortal, evil vampires) who hunt her kind from outside its sanctuary.
What people think about Vampire Academy
Vampire Academy is at its best when it leans into its own sharp, acerbic sense of fun—a supernatural boarding-school romp that knows how to wink at the genre while still delivering real stakes. Zoey Deutch’s Rose is the engine: brash, quick-witted, and strangely endearing, she turns what could’ve been standard vampire lore into a lively, character-driven ride. The movie’s real hook is the friendship at its center, giving the action and fantasy trappings a warm, human heartbeat amid the snark and danger. If you’re looking for brooding romance or solemn mythology, this may feel too cheeky—but if you want a brisk, entertaining mash-up of comedy, action, and vampire politics, it’s an easy good time.
Vampire Academy is clearly trying to mash up teen comedy, action, and supernatural school intrigue into a snarky, fast-moving franchise starter, with a strong friendship at its core. The problem is it feels overstuffed and rushed, cramming in lore, factions, and plot beats so quickly that the story can come off messy and oddly weightless. A lot of the dialogue and character types lean hard on familiar YA clichés, which makes the stakes harder to take seriously even when the movie wants you to. If you’re in the mood for a campy, glossy vampire romp with some attitude and don’t mind uneven writing, you might have fun—but if you want coherent world-building and tight pacing, this likely isn’t your night.
