Deadfall (2012)

Deadfall is the kind of wintry crime thriller that feels carved out of ice: tense, atmospheric, and quietly old-school in its confidence, like a Western-noir where the landscape itself tightens the screws. Stefan Ruzowitzky stages the story with sturdy genre craftsmanship, letting dread accumulate in small looks and bad decisions, while a terrific cast—Eric Bana’s coiled menace, Olivia Wilde’s wary resilience, and Charlie Hunnam’s bruised decency—keeps every scene alive with competing instincts. The mood is bleak but gripping, building toward a vivid, high-pressure showdown that earns its heat precisely because the film has been so cold-blooded along the way. It is not for the squeamish—this is R-rated and sometimes brutal—but if you like your thrillers sharp, snowy, and fueled by performances you can’t quite shake, it’s an easy one to recommend.

Deadfall is clearly aiming for a snowy, pressure-cooker crime thriller where two desperate siblings collide with a seemingly normal family holiday and everything spirals. The problem is the screenplay often feels like it’s forcing big “twist” moments and dark irony instead of earning them, so the tone wobbles between gritty thriller and borderline freak-show escalation. It’s also unapologetically brutal, with violence that’s meant to shock more than illuminate, which can make the Thanksgiving framing feel tasteless rather than clever. If you’re in it for cold-weather atmosphere and a committed cast (Bana in particular brings menace), you might get enough to coast on, but if you need tight writing and consistent mood, this one will test your patience.
