Damsels in Distress (2012)

Damsels in Distress is a rare kind of campus comedy: airy and elegant on the surface, but quietly sharp about loneliness, self-invention, and the strange little rituals people use to survive. Whit Stillman writes in crisp, whimsical rhythms, and Greta Gerwig meets him note for note, turning Violet into a hilariously confident would-be savior whose certainty is both charming and just a little precarious. The vibe is pastel, offbeat, and gently absurd—think donuts as therapy and dance as a philosophy—yet it never feels mean, only mischievously observant. If you want broad laughs or realistic college grit, this may not be your wavelength, but if you enjoy clever conversation, dry performances, and a delightful world that runs on its own logic, it’s an utter treat.

Damsels in Distress is clearly trying to be a quirky, old-school campus satire with Whit Stillman’s talky, mannered wit and a sincere streak about loneliness and depression. The problem is it often plays like a carefully choreographed affectation: characters speak in self-important mini-monologues, the humor leans on deliberate artificiality, and the plot’s “donuts and tap-dancing as therapy” vibe can feel more like nonsense than insight. If you need your comedy grounded, your romance emotionally believable, or your satire to actually bite, this may come off as pretentious and full of caricatures. Still, if you enjoy stylized dialogue, oddball social rituals, and Greta Gerwig committing hard to a strange tone, you might find it charming in a “what on earth am I watching” way.
