The DUFF (2015)

What makes The DUFF click is how it takes a cruel high-school label and turns it into a surprisingly sharp, warm comedy about self-respect—without pretending teenage social life isn’t messy. Mae Whitman is terrific: funny, prickly, and instantly relatable, anchoring the movie with the kind of lived-in honesty that makes the laughs land and the emotions sneak up on you. The vibe is bright and brisk, with a knowing, slightly postmodern wink at teen-movie clichés, but it still delivers a genuinely sweet central chemistry and a message that feels earned rather than preached. It does lean into PG-13 raunch and familiar rom-com beats, so it’s not for everyone, but if you want a smart, upbeat crowd-pleaser with real heart, this one’s easy to root for.

The DUFF is clearly trying to be a modern, self-aware teen rom-com about labels, insecurity, and learning to own who you are, and it does have a likable lead in Mae Whitman who sells the awkward confidence arc. The problem is it often takes the safest, most predictable route to get there, leaning on familiar high-school clichés and a “seen this before” romance that rarely surprises. The humor lands in bursts but isn’t consistently sharp, and the movie’s message can feel a bit muddled between genuine empowerment and standard makeover/social-status plotting. If you want something as biting and iconic as Mean Girls, you’ll probably find this lightweight; if you’re happy with a breezy, PG-13 comfort watch with a few charming moments, it’ll do the job.
