Gimme Shelter (2013)

Gimme Shelter is the kind of grounded, hard-won drama that earns its emotion instead of begging for it, powered by a surprisingly raw, vulnerable turn from Vanessa Hudgens that makes you forget you’re watching a “performance” at all. Ron Krauss keeps the camera close to the bruises—physical and spiritual—finding authenticity in the messy, unglamorous machinery of foster care, broken families, and the small mercies that can still slip through the cracks. Rosario Dawson brings real heat and hurt to the film’s most volatile scenes, while Ann Dowd lends the story a steady, unvarnished gravitas that feels like a hand on the shoulder rather than a sermon. It’s not an easy sit and it can feel blunt in places, but if you’re on the fence, this is a movie that meets its characters at their lowest and still believes, convincingly, in the possibility of shelter.

Gimme Shelter is clearly aiming for an inspirational, ripped-from-the-headlines drama about a pregnant teen clawing her way toward safety, and it wants you to leave feeling hopeful. The problem is the writing often feels like it’s pushing a message instead of letting the characters earn it, with familiar beats, on-the-nose speeches, and a clunky progression that can come off preachy. If you’re sensitive to “issue movie” storytelling that plays like propaganda or after-school-special melodrama, this will likely test your patience. That said, Vanessa Hudgens brings sincere effort and a bit of grit to the lead, and the shelter setting has moments of warmth that may work if you’re mainly in the mood for straightforward uplift.
