Night Train to Lisbon is the rare mystery that feels like a midnight conversation with a great book—romantic, haunted, and quietly thrilling in the way it invites you to reconsider the life you’re living. Bille August turns Lisbon into a labyrinth of sunlit streets and shadowed memories, and Jeremy Irons anchors the film with a performance of weary intelligence that makes every clue feel personal, not procedural. As the story slips between past and present, the atmosphere does the heavy lifting: political danger, intimate longing, and the ache of roads not taken, all carried by a terrific cast and a parade of memorable faces. It’s not for viewers craving a brisk, twisty thriller, and there is a notably brutal interrogation scene, but if you’re in the mood for a handsome, adult drama that seduces you with mood, ideas, and emotion, this train is worth boarding.

Night Train to Lisbon is clearly aiming for a thoughtful, literary mystery-romance about a man jolted awake by another person’s story, with Lisbon and its history doing a lot of the heavy lifting. The problem is it often feels like a respectful book report on intrigue rather than a thriller you can actually feel, with pacing so gentle and tension so muted that the “investigation” can play more like drifting from conversation to conversation.
