Christopher and His Kind is special because it captures Berlin on the brink—alive with freedom, danger, and possibility—while keeping its focus on the intimate, human stakes of becoming yourself. Matt Smith gives a mesmerizing performance as Christopher Isherwood, bringing a sharp, searching intelligence to a story that’s as romantic as it is quietly political, and the film’s deft touch lets desire, humor, and dread coexist in the same frame. Without turning into a history lecture, it feels insightful about how art and identity are forged under pressure, and somehow still lands as uplifting in its insistence on honesty and connection. It won’t be for everyone if you’re looking for a tidy, comforting romance, but if you want a brilliant, tender drama that lingers like a remembered night out, it’s absolutely worth your time.

Christopher and His Kind is clearly aiming for an unvarnished portrait of Isherwood’s Berlin years—sex, politics, and personal awakening colliding as the city darkens around him. The problem is the film often feels fragmented and oddly hollow, jumping between episodes without building much emotional momentum, so what should be provocative can come off as pompous or simply dull. Matt Smith has moments of intelligence and restraint, but if you need a convincing romantic pull or a lead you can really invest in, his detached, sometimes selfish portrayal may leave you cold.
