[REC]⁴ Apocalypse (2014)
Ángela Vidal, the young television reporter who entered the building with the firemen, manages to make it out alive. But what the soldiers don't know is that she carries the seed of the strange infection. She is to be taken to a provisional quarantine facility, a high-security installation where she will have to stay in isolation for several days. An old oil tanker, miles off shore and surrounded by water on all sides, has been especially equipped for the quarantine.
What people think about [REC]⁴ Apocalypse
What makes [REC]⁴: Apocalypse special is how it snaps the series back into its mean, nerve-jangling groove, trapping you in a floating steel labyrinth where every corridor feels like a bad decision. Jaume Balagueró stages the horror with a tight grip on pacing and atmosphere, letting tension build in the hum of the ship before it erupts into sharp, ugly bursts of chaos that feel relentlessly immediate. Manuela Velasco remains the franchise’s anchor—tough, terrified, and compelling—so even when the film is sprinting, it never loses its human pulse. If you want the wilder, more playful detour of the third film, this colder, more claustrophobic ride may not be your flavor, but for fans of tense, fast, contained horror, it’s a bracing return to form.
[REC]⁴: Apocalypse is clearly trying to give the series a bigger, more “final chapter” feel by moving the chaos to an isolated quarantine ship and leaning into action-forward survival horror. The problem is it trades the raw, claustrophobic panic that made the earlier films hit so hard for a more generic outbreak-movie rhythm, with stretches that feel routine rather than terrifying. If you’re coming for relentless found-footage intensity, sharp scares, or the unsettling religious edge the franchise flirted with before, this one may feel like a noisy detour that doesn’t land emotionally. That said, the setting is a solid pressure cooker, and Manuela Velasco still brings enough grit to make it watchable if you just want a brisk, gory ride without expecting the series at its best.
