Explained

What people think about Here Comes the Boom

Here Comes the Boom is the kind of crowd-pleaser that sneaks up on you: it looks like a goofy “teacher becomes fighter” gimmick, then wins you over with real, earnest heart and an underdog spirit that’s hard to resist. Kevin James is disarmingly likable as a guy who’s lost his spark and finds it again in the most bruising, ridiculous way imaginable, while Salma Hayek brings warmth and snap to the flirtatious, grounded counterpoint. The tone is genial and inspirational with enough solid laughs and surprisingly well-staged MMA action to keep it moving, building to the kind of feel-good momentum that makes you root for everyone in the room. If you’re allergic to sports-movie formulas or don’t care for fight violence, it may not be your match—but if you want an easy-to-like movie that leaves you in a better mood than it found you, this one delivers.
