16 Wishes takes a familiar teen-daydream premise and gives it a fizzy, heartfelt spark: what if the things you’ve been longing for showed up all at once, and you had to learn—quickly—what they’re really worth. Debby Ryan carries the movie with bright comedic timing and an easy sincerity, making Abby’s wish-fueled birthday feel like a roller coaster that’s funny, sweet, and just anxious enough to be relatable. The tone is light, magical, and family-friendly, but it still sneaks in a genuinely useful idea about gratitude, friendship, and the difference between getting what you want and getting what you need. It’s not aiming to surprise you with wild twists, but if you’re in the mood for a charming, cozy fantasy with a good heart, it’s an easy candle to light.

16 Wishes is aiming to be a breezy, feel-good teen fairy tale about learning what you actually want versus what you think you want, and it mostly delivers that simple message. The problem is it does it in the most obvious, TV-movie way possible: the plot runs on convenient twists, the “wishes go wrong” logic is pretty silly, and the characters don’t get much depth beyond their assigned roles. If you’re hoping for sharp writing, real emotional weight, or anything that feels less dated, this will probably test your patience. But if you’re in the mood for a harmless, family-friendly Debby Ryan vehicle with a few fun wish-fulfillment moments and low stakes, it’s an easy enough watch.
