Luca Guadagnino shoots tennis like a contact sport for the soul, cutting through time with a slick, propulsive structure that makes every look and pause feel like a rally you can’t quite predict. Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor generate the kind of charged chemistry that turns flirtation into strategy and intimacy into a weapon, all while the film stays irresistibly stylish and a little dangerous. It is sexy, sharp, and unapologetically adult—so if you’re allergic to messy people making messy choices, you may want to sit this match out, but if you like your romance with teeth, it’s a must-watch.

Challengers is clearly aiming to be a sweaty, stylish psychosexual sports drama where tennis is just the arena for power, desire, and ego, and Luca Guadagnino knows how to make all of that look and sound intoxicating. The problem is that for some viewers the nonlinear storytelling and teasing tension promise a bigger emotional and erotic payoff than the script ultimately delivers, especially when it comes to the ending. If you want clean sports catharsis, likable characters, or a romance you can root for, this triangle can feel more like manipulation and posturing than passion. Still, Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor are compelling, and the match dynamics and vibe are strong enough that if you’re here for mood, mess, and performance-driven chemistry, you may have a good time even if it doesn’t fully stick the landing.
