Our Idiot Brother (2011)

Our Idiot Brother is the kind of comedy-drama that sneaks up on you: it looks like a goofy “family train wreck” movie, then reveals a surprisingly tender heart beating underneath. Paul Rudd makes Ned disarmingly lovable—an open-faced optimist whose guileless honesty acts like a truth serum on his tightly wound sisters, played with sharp, lived-in chemistry by Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, and a terrific ensemble. The vibe is warm, a little messy, and gently human, finding laughs in awkward collisions while still caring about the bruises people carry.
