Cold Fish (2011)

Cold Fish is the kind of thriller that feels like it’s been plugged into a live wire: a lurid, darkly funny descent that turns the everyday mundanity of small-business life into something nightmare-bright and unforgettable. Sion Sono directs with a fearless, feverish energy, balancing grisly horror with a wicked sense of humor, and the camera lingers on neon aquariums and banal storefronts as if they’re portals to something rotten underneath. The real hook is Denden’s performance—charming, volcanic, and deeply unsettling—making every friendly smile feel like a threat you can’t quite name yet. Fair warning: it’s extreme in sex and violence and absolutely not a casual watch, but if you can handle a boundary-pushing crime-horror that’s as bracing as it is beautifully shot, it’s a film you won’t shake off.

Cold Fish is clearly trying to be a bleak, satirical descent into complicity and cruelty, using the absurd world of rival fish shops as a gateway to something far more rotten. The problem is Sion Sono pushes the shock so hard and so long—sexual violence, extreme gore, and humiliation—that it can feel less like sharp commentary and more like endurance cinema with messy pacing. Performances are intentionally heightened, but if you don’t click with that hysterical tone, the movie can come off as overindulgent rather than unsettling in a meaningful way. If you can stomach the content, there’s real tension and a few genuinely gripping stretches, but if you’re not in the mood for relentless nastiness and escalation, this one will waste your evening and your nerves.
