Free Birds (2013)

Free Birds takes a holiday that usually feels prepackaged and turns it into a cheerfully weird, high-energy animated caper: a time-travel comedy where the underdogs are literally trying to rewrite the menu. The movie’s secret weapon is its buddy dynamic—Owen Wilson’s laid-back Reggie and Woody Harrelson’s manic, mission-obsessed Jake bounce off each other with enough warmth and momentum to keep the silliness airborne, while Amy Poehler adds a bright, likable spark to the chaos. It plays like a Thanksgiving-flavored cartoon adventure, full of gags, close calls, and a surprisingly earnest streak about courage and belonging, without ever getting heavy. Free Birds is clearly aiming for a goofy, kid-friendly time-travel adventure with a surprisingly earnest “save the turkeys” message, and the premise is fun enough to hook a family for a night. The problem is the execution: the story gets cluttered and jumpy, the jokes lean more on noise and rude gags than genuinely clever comedy, and the whole thing can feel like a bunch of half-baked ideas stitched together.
