Leonardo DiCaprio disappears into Hoover with a performance that’s both commanding and unsettling, making you feel the charisma that drew people in and the cold control that kept them at a distance. Clint Eastwood directs with a steady, somber elegance—less flashy crime thriller than historical character study—so the tension comes from shifting loyalties, buried emotions, and the cost of living as your own propaganda. If you want a brisk, fact-by-fact biopic you may find it deliberate, but if you’re drawn to complex portraits of ambition and secrecy, it’s an absorbing watch.

J. Edgar is clearly aiming for a weighty, prestige biopic about power, paranoia, and the cost of building an institution around one man’s ego. The problem is it often feels sluggish and oddly distant, with a jumpy, sometimes confusing structure and a script that sketches big moments without digging deep enough to make them land. The aging makeup can also be distracting, pulling you out of scenes that should feel intimate and tense.
