Headhunters (2011)

Headhunters is the kind of thriller that grabs you by the collar and never loosens its grip, a slick, darkly funny Norwegian adrenaline shot that keeps reinventing itself just when you think you’ve got the angle. Morten Tyldum directs with razor-wire precision, turning sleek corporate surfaces and quiet countryside into a pressure cooker, while Aksel Hennie gives a wonderfully nervous, charismatic performance that makes every bad decision feel painfully human. The movie’s real pleasure is its tonal agility: it’s stylish and tense, but it also knows exactly when to twist the knife with a wicked grin, delivering surprises without feeling like it’s cheating. Fair warning: it’s violent, sexually explicit, and unapologetically grim at times, but if you can handle the edge, you’ll be rewarded with a relentlessly entertaining ride.

Headhunters is trying to be a slick, nasty little cat-and-mouse thriller about greed, ego, and a man whose double life finally bites back, and on a moment-to-moment level it often delivers real momentum. The problem is that it sometimes leans on convenience and “because the plot says so” turns, so if you’re allergic to contrivances and tidy wrap-ups, you may find yourself rolling your eyes between the shocks. It also gets pretty grim and occasionally schlocky, with bursts of gore and sexual content that don’t feel remotely restrained. Still, Aksel Hennie and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau bring enough intensity to keep it watchable if you want a fast, pulpy ride and don’t demand airtight logic.
