Kon-Tiki (2012)

Kon-Tiki is the kind of old-fashioned, big-sky adventure we hardly get anymore: a true story told with the tactile thrill of rope, wood, salt spray, and stubborn human will. It turns a simple premise—a handful of men on a balsa raft daring the Pacific—into something sweeping and painterly, with lush cinematography and craftsmanship that makes you feel every creak of the vessel and every shift in the horizon. The tone is rousing and earnest rather than ironic, finding wonder in the ocean’s beauty even as it respects how quickly that beauty can turn dangerous. If you want a talky history lesson, this may feel too physical and straightforward, but if you’re craving a well-made voyage movie that earns its inspiration the hard way, it’s a terrific ride.

Kon-Tiki is clearly trying to celebrate a jaw-dropping real-life feat: ordinary men betting their lives on a crude raft to test a controversial theory, and on that basic level it delivers handsome ocean photography and solid tension when nature turns nasty. The problem is the film often settles for “survival montage” storytelling, with thin character work and manufactured friction that can make the human side feel oddly lightweight for such an extreme journey. If you want a rich historical deep-dive or a psychologically layered adventure, this may feel like a polished reenactment rather than a gripping drama. But if you’re happy with a straightforward, visually strong man-vs-sea expedition movie (with a few PG-13 intense and gory moments), it’s an efficient watch that respects the scale of the undertaking even when it doesn’t fully earn the emotions.
