Gallants (2010)
Master Law awakes from a 30-year coma without memories, but his martial arts skills are intact. His renowned kung fu academy is now a teahouse, and greedy developers are trying to steamroll it to make way for condos
What people think about Gallants
Gallants is special because it feels like a love letter to classic Hong Kong kung fu cinema that still lands with real punch today—both in its bone-snapping choreography and its big-hearted sense of community. It’s funny without turning fights into jokes, and when the story slows down, it finds a surprisingly warm, even wistful groove about time, legacy, and what gets lost when a neighborhood changes. The action is crisp and inventive, staged with the kind of clarity that lets you savor every move, while the performances give the comedy and drama an easy, lived-in charm. If you want relentless grit or a slick modern blockbuster sheen, this might not be your flavor, but if you’re craving a crowd-pleasing, heartfelt throwback that knows exactly why we fell in love with kung fu movies in the first place, it’s a delight.
Gallants is clearly trying to be a warm, old-school Hong Kong kung fu throwback with underdog charm, aging heroes, and a community-vs-developers setup that’s easy to root for. The problem is it often feels like it’s coasting on nostalgia and jokes while rationing the very thing you came for: satisfying, authentic martial arts action, with pacing that can drag in the middle. When the fights do show up, they may not hit hard enough to justify the buildup, especially if you’re expecting wall-to-wall choreography. If you’re in the mood for a light, sentimental genre tribute with a few fun moments, you might be fine; if you want a genuinely punchy kung fu showcase, this probably won’t do it.
