Chuck (2017)
A drama inspired by the life of heavyweight boxer Chuck Wepner.
What people think about Chuck
Chuck is the kind of biopic that earns your attention the old-fashioned way: with grit in its knuckles and a surprising tenderness in its heart. Liev Schreiber gives a muscular, lived-in performance that makes Chuck Wepner feel less like a legend and more like a real man trying to stay upright under the weight of his own moment in the spotlight. The film has the bruised, blue-collar charm of a story told over a beer at the local bar—honest about the costs of fame, and compelling even when it leans into familiar rise-and-fall rhythms. If you want a glossy sports-movie triumph parade, this isn’t that, but if you’re up for something watchable, grounded, and quietly poignant, it lands like a solid body shot.
Chuck is clearly aiming for a grounded, working-class boxing story about the man who inspired a legend, and it does have a scrappy sincerity to it. The problem is it often plays like a checklist of boxing-biopic beats, leaning hard on voiceover and a very “tell-you-how-to-feel” soundtrack early on instead of letting scenes breathe. If you’re tired of familiar rise-fall-redemption rhythms and want something formally fresh or emotionally surprising, this may feel competent but painfully ordinary. Still, if you just want a straightforward underdog drama with solid effort and a real-life hook, it’s watchable—just don’t expect a knockout.
