What makes The Monk worth your time is how confidently it marries gothic beauty to a slow, inexorable moral collapse, turning a familiar “temptation” premise into something lush, unsettling, and strangely hypnotic. Dominik Moll stages Madrid’s cloisters and candlelit corridors with elegant, storybook menace, and the film’s atmosphere does half the seducing while Vincent Cassel does the rest—his Ambrosio is magnetic, proud, and frighteningly human as certainty curdles into craving. The imagery is rich and ritualistic, more fever dream than jump-scare thriller, and it builds toward a finale that lands with real weight. It’s not for viewers who shy away from religious provocation or flashes of nudity and cruelty, but if you like your thrillers handsome, heady, and darkly operatic, this one casts a spell.

The Monk wants to be a lush, sinful descent-from-grace thriller, mixing religious dread with erotic temptation and moral rot. The problem is it often plays like a chilly, restrained art-house take on material that’s practically begging for heat, so the pacing can feel sluggish and the “shock” factor oddly muted. Vincent Cassel brings a stern, watchable presence, and the period atmosphere has a grim elegance, but the characters’ inner lives and faith don’t always get enough depth to make the fall truly devastating.
