Frank (2014)
A young wannabe musician discovers he has bitten off more than he can chew when he joins an eccentric pop band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank.
What people think about Frank
Frank is one of those rare films that wears its weirdness like a badge of honor and then, almost sneakily, earns your heart. Lenny Abrahamson turns an absurd premise—a band led by a man who never removes his papier-mâché head—into a funny, tender, slightly melancholy meditation on creativity, ego, and the fragile line between “genius” and simply not being okay. Michael Fassbender delivers a performance that’s astonishingly expressive even while hidden, while Domhnall Gleeson and Maggie Gyllenhaal keep the comedy sharp and the emotional stakes real, so the laughter lands with a sting of truth. It’s not for everyone—its offbeat rhythm and darker undercurrents won’t satisfy viewers looking for a conventional crowd-pleaser—but if you’re open to something original, humane, and quietly unforgettable, Frank is absolutely worth the leap.
Frank is trying to be an offbeat, bittersweet look at artistic obsession and the weird intimacy of making music with people you don’t fully understand, and it mostly commits to that oddball tone. The problem is it can feel like it’s wandering on purpose: the pacing is shaggy, the story drifts, and by the time it aims for bigger emotional payoffs, it may not feel like the pieces quite click into something satisfying. If you need a tight plot, clear answers, or a conventional “mystery” arc, this will likely test your patience. Still, Fassbender (even behind the mask) and Gleeson give genuinely engaging performances, and if you enjoy uncomfortable humor mixed with melancholy character work, it’s a distinctive ride.
