Amour (2012)

Michael Haneke’s direction is calm and unsentimental, letting the quiet rhythms of an apartment and a marriage speak for themselves, until the ordinary becomes quietly shattering. Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva give performances of such dignity and precision that you don’t feel like you’re watching characters so much as sharing a room with real people who have lived a whole life together. It’s not a “date night” romance and it can be emotionally bruising, but if you want a film that honors commitment with honesty and tenderness, Amour is unforgettable.

Amour is trying to be an unflinching, grown-up look at love when aging and illness strip away dignity, and it commits to that idea with almost ruthless honesty. Haneke’s style is deliberately plain and detached, so if you need warmth, catharsis, or a romantic glow, you may find it emotionally cold—more like watching a clinical reality unfold than being guided through a tearjerker. It’s slow, intimate, and heavy, with moments that are disturbing not because they’re flashy, but because they feel inevitable. If you can handle that austerity, the performances (especially Riva and Trintignant) are extraordinary and the film’s moral weight lingers, but it’s absolutely not a “date night drama” or an easy cry.
