Ryan Gosling’s restrained presence and Kristin Scott Thomas’s venomously commanding energy give the story a charged, poisonous family dynamic, while Vithaya Pansringarm radiates an almost mythic authority that makes the air feel heavier when he enters a scene. It’s mesmerizing if you’re in the mood for pure atmosphere and audacious style over tidy answers—but the graphic brutality and unsettling sexual material mean it’s very much not for the faint of heart.

Only God Forgives is clearly trying to be a neon-lit, mythic crime nightmare about guilt, punishment, and the kind of violence that feels ritualistic rather than exciting. The problem is it often plays like a beautiful mood board stretched into a feature: long silences, thin character motivation, and a story that’s more suggestion than satisfying drama, which can feel boring if you want momentum or emotional connection. The brutality and sexual menace aren’t just “edgy”—they’re central, graphic, and deliberately uncomfortable, so if you’re sensitive to extreme violence or exploitation-themed material, this is absolutely not a safe pick. That said, if you like Nicolas Winding Refn at his most stylized and you’re happy to trade plot and warmth for atmosphere, striking imagery, and a hypnotic performance from Vithaya Pansringarm, you may find it oddly compelling.
