Heartbeats (2010)
Francis is a young gay man, Marie is a young straight woman and the two of them are best friends -- until the day the gorgeous Nicolas walks into a Montreal coffee shop. The two friends, instantly and equally infatuated, compete for Nicolas' indeterminate affections, a conflict that climaxes when the trio visit the vacation home of Nicolas' mother. The frothy comedy unfolds through narrative, fantasy sequences and confessional monologues.
What people think about Heartbeats
Heartbeats is the kind of romantic drama that feels like falling in love with a photograph: intoxicating, meticulously composed, and a little bit dangerous to your better judgment. Xavier Dolan turns a simple triangle of desire into a vibrant Montreal daydream, where saturated colors, swooning slow motion, and a perfectly chosen soundtrack capture the giddy rush—and quiet humiliation—of infatuation. It’s charming and sharply relatable in the way it understands how we project fantasies onto beautiful strangers, and the performances keep the emotions grounded even when the style flirts with the surreal. If you prefer your romances tidy and plot-driven, it may feel airy, but if you like films that bottle a mood and make your heart recognize itself, this one is hard to resist.
Heartbeats is clearly aiming for a chic, bittersweet portrait of obsession and the way desire can scramble even the closest friendships, wrapped in Montreal cool and pop-art flair. The problem is it often confuses aesthetic with insight: the slow-motion, needle drops, and self-aware flourishes can feel like the movie is admiring itself more than its characters, and the love-triangle tension loops in a way that starts to feel repetitive. If you need emotional depth, believable growth, or a plot that actually moves, this may come off as shallow and a bit juvenile. But if you’re happy to treat it like a stylish mood piece with some sharp moments and strong visual taste, you’ll probably be more forgiving than its harsher critics.
