AnnaSophia Robb brings a grounded toughness to Bethany Hamilton, while Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid give the film a steady emotional backbone that makes the triumphs feel earned, not manufactured. Director Sean McNamara keeps the tone uplifting without turning it into a sermon, and the surfing cinematography is so alive you can almost taste the saltwater. It’s not for everyone—there’s a brief but intense shark-attack moment and the unabashed sincerity may be too straightforward for cynics—but if you’re open to an inspiring family drama, this one goes down smooth and stays with you.

Soul Surfer is aiming to be an uplifting, family-friendly true story about resilience, faith, and getting back on the board after a life-altering tragedy, and in that lane it’s sincere and easy to watch. The problem is it often plays like a polished inspirational template, smoothing over the messier psychological fallout in favor of tidy beats, swelling music, and “you can do it” moments that can feel a bit like Hollywood cheese. If you want a raw, complicated trauma drama, or you’re allergic to overtly faith-forward messaging and sentimentality, this may test your patience. Still, the performances are earnest, the surfing and Hawaiian setting are genuinely appealing, and the central message can land if you’re in the mood for a straightforward, PG-13 crowd-pleaser.
