Maleficent (2014)

Maleficent feels like a dark fairytale told by candlelight—familiar in outline, but thrillingly reimagined from the inside out. Angelina Jolie gives a magnetic performance that turns the iconic villain into something more human and haunting, the kind of character you can’t stop watching even when she’s at her fiercest. Robert Stromberg’s film is drenched in lavish, storybook visuals—enchanted forests, looming castles, and magic that looks tactile enough to touch—while still finding an affecting emotional core beneath the spectacle. If you want a traditional, sugar-sweet princess story, this moodier, more sympathetic take may not be your flavor, but for viewers craving a unique fantasy with bite and heart, it’s a spell worth falling under.

Maleficent is clearly trying to flip a classic villain into a sympathetic, modern fairy-tale lead, and Angelina Jolie commits hard enough to make that idea occasionally work. The problem is the movie’s storytelling: it’s oddly simplistic for how “epic” it wants to feel, with a tone that lurches between dark betrayal, family-friendly whimsy, and romance without smoothing the transitions. A lot of the plot beats feel more like they’re checking off brand-required moments than earning them, and the supporting characters don’t help much.
