The Good Doctor (2011)

The Good Doctor is the kind of clinical thriller that gets under your skin not with jump scares, but with the slow, horrifying realization of how easily charm and credentials can mask neediness turning predatory. Orlando Bloom delivers an against-type performance that’s quietly riveting—his doctor isn’t a cackling villain, but a lonely striver whose hunger for respect curdles into obsession, and the film lets that transformation unfold with unnerving plausibility. Lance Daly keeps the tension humming in sterile hallways and hushed rooms, even slipping in a darkly comic edge that makes you laugh and then immediately feel guilty for it. It’s not for viewers who need a likable lead or clean moral comfort, but if you want a suspenseful psychological drama that feels uncomfortably close to real life, this one will hold you in its grip.

The Good Doctor is clearly aiming for a chilly, character-driven thriller about insecurity curdling into obsession inside a sterile hospital setting, and it does have a nasty little premise that could’ve really bitten. The problem is it often plays like it’s afraid of its own darkness: the script skims the surface of Martin’s psychology, so his escalation can feel more like plot mechanics than a truly unsettling descent. The pacing and tone get uneven as it heads toward the finish, and the ending may leave you thinking it pulled its punches instead of committing to something sharper. If you’re mainly here for a tense, fully developed psychological study, you may be disappointed—but if you can accept a restrained, PG-13-leaning thriller with a few strong performances and an uncomfortable vibe, it’s passable.
