Mirrors 2 (2010)

Mirrors 2 is the kind of lean, nasty little horror sequel that knows its best trick and keeps finding fresh ways to twist it: reflections that don’t just lie, they threaten, seduce, and set the room on edge before anything even happens. Set largely inside a reopened New Orleans department store, it leans into a chilly, neon-after-hours vibe where every pane of glass feels like a loaded weapon, and the movie’s real pleasure is watching its inventive, effects-forward set pieces build to wince-inducing payoffs. Nick Stahl gives the story a bruised, haunted center, grounding the supernatural mayhem in a man still limping through grief and guilt, which makes the mystery feel more personal than you’d expect from a direct-to-video entry. Fair warning: it’s absolutely not for the squeamish—there’s strong gore and disturbing subject matter—but if you want a punchy, mirror-obsessed fright ride with creative kills and a mean streak, this one delivers.

Mirrors 2 is clearly trying to deliver a nasty little supernatural revenge mystery, using the “what you see in the mirror happens in real life” hook to build dread and rack up inventive, glass-themed deaths. The problem is it feels like a cheaper echo of the first film: the scares are familiar, the dialogue is clunky, and the acting can’t always sell the emotional trauma it opens with, so the tension keeps slipping away. It also leans hard on gore and shock content (including sexual violence), which can feel more grim than scary if you’re not in the mood for that kind of ugliness. If you just want a straightforward, mean-spirited late-night horror with a couple of decent set pieces, it’ll do the job, but if you’re hoping for smart mystery plotting or genuinely unsettling atmosphere, you’ll probably be disappointed.
