The Hit List (2011)

The Hit List takes a gloriously nasty “one bad night” idea and squeezes it for every drop of suspense: a drunken rant becomes a real kill order, and suddenly a regular guy is sprinting to outrun a nightmare he accidentally wrote into existence. Director William Kaufman keeps the pacing lean and mean, staging crisp, hard-hitting action that feels more urgent than flashy, while the tone stays grimly fun in that guilty-pleasure thriller way—part cat-and-mouse, part moral panic. Cuba Gooding Jr. brings a cold, unnerving confidence that makes the villain feel like a force of nature, and the film’s best trick is how it turns fantasy wish-fulfillment into immediate, sweaty consequences. It’s not for the squeamish—this is severe, brutal violence—but if you’re on the fence about a tough, entertaining B-thriller with a killer hook and real tension, this one delivers.

The problem is it plays like a familiar direct-to-video action template, with a premise that promises moral panic and dark irony but doesn’t dig deep enough to make the tension or character choices really land. The violence is frequent and sometimes nasty, yet it rarely feels shocking in a meaningful way because the storytelling and escalation are more routine than gripping. If you’re here for a lean, disposable chase movie with Cuba Gooding Jr. bringing some menace and energy, you’ll get a serviceable time; if you want a smarter thriller that fully exploits its idea, this will likely feel undercooked.
