Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013)

Texas Chainsaw 3D works best when it leans into a pulpy, backwoods-gothic vibe: a sun-bleached road trip that curdles into a storm of family secrets, isolated wealth, and the kind of dread that creeps up from below the floorboards. John Luessenhop keeps the pace brisk and the energy high, building suspense with tight, nasty set pieces that deliver the franchise’s signature shocks without relying solely on the 3D as a crutch. Alexandra Daddario gives the story a grounded center amid the carnage, while the film serves up a handful of genuinely effective jump scares and crowd-pleasing slasher thrills. It’s not for the squeamish—and if you want elevated, subtle horror, this isn’t that—but if you’re on the fence and craving a mean, efficient roller coaster with a classic icon lurking in the dark, it earns its seatbelt.

Texas Chainsaw 3D is clearly trying to modernize the Leatherface mythos with a glossy “inheritance-gone-wrong” setup and some crowd-pleasing, R-rated carnage. The problem is it plays like a branding exercise more than a story: the continuity is wobbly, the character decisions are painfully convenient, and the plot twists feel like they’re chasing shock over sense. If you want the raw, grimy dread of the original or a sequel that treats its own mythology with care, this will likely irritate you more than it scares you. Still, if all you’re after is a slick, loud slasher with a few gnarly set pieces and Alexandra Daddario doing her best in a thin role, it can work as disposable late-night horror.
