Mortal Engines (2018)
Many thousands of years in the future, Earth’s cities roam the globe on huge wheels, devouring each other in a struggle for ever diminishing resources. On one of these massive traction cities, the old London, Tom Natsworthy has an unexpected encounter with a mysterious young woman from the wastelands who will change the course of his life forever.
What people think about Mortal Engines
Mortal Engines is the kind of big, unapologetically imaginative blockbuster that earns its spectacle, dropping you into a wildly original future where entire cities thunder across the earth like predators and every frame seems built by artists with something to prove. The opening chase grabs you by the collar and doesn’t really let go, carrying you through brisk pacing, punchy action, and a steampunk-meets-scrapyard aesthetic of gorgeous costumes, clanking machinery, and sky-high scale. Beneath the metal and momentum, it’s also anchored by a prickly, compelling duo at the center and a villain with the kind of theatrical menace Hugo Weaving can deliver in his sleep. It’s not for everyone if you need airtight realism or a totally fresh story beat-for-beat, but if you want world-building you can practically climb into, this is a seriously fun ride.
Mortal Engines is clearly aiming for big, old-school sci-fi spectacle: a bonkers world where entire cities chase and eat each other, with enough steampunk grit to fill a warehouse. The problem is the story often feels like it’s sprinting through familiar dystopian beats without giving the characters or emotions time to land, so you may admire the visuals while feeling oddly detached. It’s also pretty mechanical and exhausting in its pacing, piling on lore, factions, and action until it starts to blur rather than build. If you can enjoy a gorgeous, noisy rollercoaster even when the plot is wobbly, you’ll get some value here; if you need sharp storytelling and real character pull, this probably isn’t your ride.
