Student Services (2010)

Student Services is a rare coming-of-age drama that refuses to sensationalize what it depicts, instead watching a young woman’s life tighten like a knot until you can almost feel the pressure in your own chest. Emmanuelle Bercot shoots with an unglamorous, clear-eyed intimacy, and Déborah François gives a fearless, deeply human performance that makes Laura’s choices feel less like “plot” and more like the desperate arithmetic of survival. The film’s vibe is somber and quietly relentless—more sad than scandalous—using its stark realism to ask what dignity costs when money runs out. It’s not for everyone, especially given the explicit sexual content and heavy subject matter, but if you want a compassionate, bracing character study that lingers long after the credits, it’s absolutely worth your time.

Student Services is clearly aiming for a sober, socially aware look at how financial pressure can corner a young student into sex work, and it doesn’t shy away from the uncomfortable realities. The problem is that the storytelling can feel thin and oddly unsurprising, with character development that’s not always strong enough to make Laura’s choices and relationships land with the emotional weight the film is reaching for. It’s also extremely explicit, with frequent nudity and intense sexual content that can feel more relentless than illuminating, especially given the presence of coercion and a rape scenario. If you’re looking for a nuanced, deeply psychological drama, you may find it blunt and underwritten, but if you can handle the explicitness, Déborah François brings a raw vulnerability that gives the film most of its impact.
