The Flood (2023)

The Flood is the kind of lean, pulpy creature thriller that knows exactly what it is and wastes no time getting you wet, rattled, and entertained: a hurricane-slammed Louisiana prison transport where nature and human nature collide at the worst possible moment. Brandon Slagle stages the mayhem with a brisk, competent hand, keeping the tension tight as floodwaters rise and giant alligators turn every corridor and rooftop into a nerve test. Casper Van Dien and Nicky Whelan give the chaos a sturdy center, selling the shifting alliances and survival instincts without pretending this is anything other than a high-concept ride. If you’re in the mood for a serious character study, look elsewhere—but if you want a nasty, storm-soaked B-movie thrill that’s never dull, this one bites.

The Flood is clearly aiming for a pulpy, high-concept creature feature where a hurricane, a jailbreak, and a swarm of oversized gators force enemies to cooperate and survive. The problem is the execution: the CGI looks cheap, the acting and dialogue often feel stiff, and the script struggles to build momentum, so tension turns into unintentional comedy more than edge-of-your-seat thrills. If you’re hoping for a tight, scary thriller or even a coherent action-horror ride, this will likely test your patience. But if you can enjoy B-movie chaos on its own terms and don’t mind rough visuals, there’s some dumb-fun potential in the simple “storm plus monsters” setup.
