Skyline (2010)

Skyline is the kind of sci-fi thriller that grabs you by the collar with a simple, terrifying idea—look at the wrong light, and you’re gone—and then escalates it into a full-blown Los Angeles nightmare with effects that still impress for a 2010 PG-13 release. The Strause brothers stage the invasion with a pulpy, end-of-the-world immediacy: skyscrapers become cages, streets turn into traps, and the action rarely lets you catch your breath as the survivors scramble for any sliver of safety. It’s not a deep character study, but it’s unapologetically ambitious, delivering slick creature work, big-scale destruction, and a nasty streak of body-horror imagery that gives the spectacle some teeth. If you want a smart, talky alien drama, look elsewhere—but if you’re on the fence and craving a lean, effects-driven ride that feels like a midnight movie with blockbuster polish, Skyline is an easy yes.

Skyline is clearly aiming for a relentless, end-of-the-world alien invasion ride, leaning hard on spectacle and constant threat rather than deep storytelling. The problem is the people at the center of it feel thinly written and often stiffly acted, so when the chaos ramps up, you may not care who makes it out. The pacing also lurches between frantic set pieces and repetitive hiding-and-running beats, with dialogue that can sound like placeholder lines between visual effects shots. If you can treat it like a noisy, effects-forward B-movie with some genuinely nasty creature imagery and a few striking invasion visuals, you might have fun; if you want smart sci-fi, coherent plotting, or characters you’ll actually root for, this probably isn’t worth your time.
