One Day (2011)

One Day feels special because it turns a simple calendar trick into a sweeping, intimate portrait of how people grow up, grow apart, and keep orbiting the same emotional truth. Lone Scherfig gives the film a light, stylish touch—witty, lived-in dialogue and a buoyant romantic-comedy vibe that gradually deepens into something more reflective without ever feeling like it’s trying too hard. Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess make Emma and Dexter believable as friends first, lovers maybe, and complicated adults always, so each yearly glimpse lands with the sting and sweetness of recognition. It won’t be for everyone if you want a straightforward, feel-good romance, but if you’re in the mood for something beautiful, entertaining, and quietly ambitious about time and timing, it’s an easy one to lean into.

One Day is clearly aiming for a bittersweet, life-spanning love story, using the “one day a year” gimmick to show how timing, ambition, and bad choices shape two people over decades. The problem is the film often feels like a highlight reel of chapters rather than a fully lived-in relationship, so the emotional beats can land with a thud instead of a punch. Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess are appealing and there are occasional sparks of warmth and wit, but the pacing can be disjointed and Hathaway’s accent may pull you out of scenes if you’re sensitive to that sort of thing. If you want a deeply immersive romance with earned catharsis, this might frustrate you; if you’re fine with a glossy, episodic sweep and a few strong moments amid uneven execution, it could still work.
