Boy (2010)

What makes Boy special is how it lets you laugh with a kid’s wild imagination one moment and then quietly feel the ache underneath it the next, all without ever turning sentimental or cynical. Taika Waititi captures 1984 rural New Zealand with a lived-in warmth—Michael Jackson daydreams, backyard bravado, and small-town mischief—while James Rolleston gives a star-making performance that’s funny, vulnerable, and completely real. The movie’s vibe is scrappy and sweet, a coming-of-age comedy that keeps bumping into harder truths about family and disappointment, and somehow comes out more tender for it. It’s not for everyone if you’re put off by rough language and messy characters, but if you can meet it on its own wavelength, it’s the kind of film that sneaks up on your heart and stays there.
