Beautiful Creatures wants to be a moody Southern-gothic teen romance with magic, fate, and that “first love against the universe” intensity, and you can feel it reaching for something grand. The problem is it often plays like a watered-down greatest-hits of supernatural YA—derivative, a bit plodding, and muddled in its rules and stakes—so the story can feel like it’s circling instead of building.
