Rhinegold is special because it treats a larger-than-life rise-from-nothing story with the velocity of a thriller and the pulse of a music film, letting Fatih Akin turn Xatar’s biography into something that feels lived-in, immediate, and strangely exhilarating. It barrels through hardship, hustle, and ambition with an eclectic, helter-skelter momentum—part coming-of-age, part crime saga, part rap origin myth—so even when the world closes in, the movie keeps finding new gears and striking moments. Emilio Sakraya anchors the chaos with a performance that makes Giwar’s drive believable, not romanticized, and the film’s rousing energy carries you right up to the edge of the stage lights. Fair warning: it’s intense and often brutal, with severe violence, heavy drug use, and harsh language, but if you can handle that heat, it’s a fun, propulsive ride with real bite and a beating heart.

Rhinegold is clearly aiming for a hard-charging, rags-to-riches crime saga that doubles as a modern German rap origin story, and Fatih Akin brings plenty of energy and grit to the setup. The problem is it crams so many life events, schemes, and pivots into one film that the character at the center can start to feel more like a highlight reel than a person you truly understand, which makes the emotional beats land unevenly. If you want a focused biopic with real psychological depth and a clean narrative through-line, this may frustrate you—especially given the severe violence, heavy drug use, and relentless profanity. But if you’re here for a fast, rough-edged rise-and-fall crime ride with a strong sense of milieu and a music-world payoff, it can still be a watchable, punchy time.
