Premium Rush (2012)
In Manhattan, a bike messenger picks up an envelope that attracts the interest of a dirty cop, who pursues the cyclist throughout the city.
What people think about Premium Rush
Premium Rush is the rare action thriller that finds a fresh engine for old-school suspense: a fixed-gear bike slicing through Manhattan like a scalpel, turning every taxi door and red light into a heartbeat. David Koepp shoots the city with kinetic clarity, so you always feel the geography of the chase, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s easy charm makes Wilee’s stubborn, adrenaline-proud heroism oddly endearing. Michael Shannon brings a jagged, unpredictable menace as the dirty cop, and the film’s ticking-clock momentum keeps tightening without drowning in grimness—it’s lean, loud, and gloriously in motion. If you want deep character study, look elsewhere, but if you miss thrillers that deliver pure, well-staged velocity, this one is a terrific ride.
Premium Rush is trying to be a lean, high-speed Manhattan chase movie that treats bike-messenger life like an action sport, and on that level it mostly delivers: it’s brisk, sweaty, and easy to watch in one sitting. The problem is the story underneath is pretty thin and often implausible, with time-jumping narration that can feel more like a gimmick than smart storytelling, and a dirty-cop villain who’s intense but not always convincing. If you need your thrillers to make solid sense or want layered characters and a plot that surprises you, this may feel formulaic and a bit sloppy. But if you’re happy to trade realism for momentum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s committed performance and the street-level energy make it a decent, disposable ride.
