Are You Here (2013)

Are You Here is a shaggy, character-first buddy comedy that sneaks up on you with a surprisingly tender pulse beneath the jokes, anchored by the odd-couple chemistry of Owen Wilson’s smooth-talking weatherman and Zach Galifianakis’ off-kilter, vulnerable best friend. Matthew Weiner (yes, that Matthew Weiner) gives the film a gently lived-in vibe—more hangout road-trip and messy family fallout than punchline machine—so the laughs come from wit, discomfort, and the way these two men keep failing upward together. Are You Here is clearly trying to mash up a loose, hangout-style buddy comedy with a messy inheritance fight and a more serious look at mental illness, and on paper that mix could’ve been sharp and human. In practice, it’s tonally all over the place: jokes land with a thud, scenes drift into self-absorbed rambling, and the story keeps switching gears without ever finding a rhythm. Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis have moments of charm, and Amy Poehler brings some much-needed bite, but the characters feel half-built and the emotional beats don’t earn their weight. If you’re expecting a consistent laugh-out-loud comedy or a thoughtful dramedy, this will likely frustrate you; it’s better suited to viewers who can tolerate an awkward, uneven ride for the occasional spark from the cast.
