Flypaper (2011)

Flypaper is the rare caper that treats a bank robbery like a playground for wit and misdirection, juggling two clashing crews, a growing romantic spark, and a whodunit pulse without dropping the ball. Rob Minkoff keeps the pace snappy and the visuals crisp, letting the movie’s clean staging and rapid-fire timing do the heavy lifting while Patrick Dempsey’s easy charm gives you someone to root for in the chaos. Tim Blake Nelson (and company) add a delightfully off-kilter comic edge, so even when the guns come out, the vibe stays more mischievous than grim. It’s not for viewers who can’t stand heavy profanity or a bit of blood, but if you want a clever, high-energy crime comedy that plays like a breezy puzzle box, this one’s a surprisingly good time.

Flypaper is trying to be a fast, twisty bank-heist farce where quirky crooks and a reluctant hero collide, and you can feel it aiming for that “clever puzzle box” energy. The problem is it’s so busy stacking complications and winking at you that the suspense and comedy rarely land cleanly, and the romance at the center doesn’t generate much spark. If you’re allergic to clichés, convenient plotting, and twists that feel more noisy than surprising, this will likely test your patience. That said, the cast is game and there are a few fun character beats, so it can work as a low-stakes, mildly chaotic watch if you don’t need it to be particularly sharp or original.
