Other People's Children (2022)

Other People’s Children is special because it finds big, aching questions—love, belonging, time—inside the everyday moments most movies rush past, and it does so with a light touch that never feels trivial. Rebecca Zlotowski’s writing is quietly razor-sharp, catching the tiny social pinpricks and unspoken negotiations of stepping into a child’s life “as if” you’re family, while still letting scenes breathe with warmth and wit. Virginie Efira gives a beautifully lived-in performance, funny and vulnerable in the same breath, making Rachel’s longing feel specific rather than sentimental. It’s not a melodrama and it won’t satisfy viewers craving grand twists, but if you’re open to an intimate dramedy that’s humane, emotionally precise, and gently devastating, this one lingers.

Other People’s Children is aiming for a grounded, adult look at love, step-parenting, and that quiet panic of wanting a family when time feels like it’s speeding up. It’s well-acted (Virginie Efira does a lot with very little) and often emotionally precise, but it’s also deliberately low-key, with minimal plot “payoffs” and a tone that can feel more observational than satisfying. If you want big romantic highs, clear villains, or tidy resolutions, this may leave you feeling like you waited for a climax that never arrives. If you’re up for a bittersweet, realistic character study that sits in uncomfortable truths and small moments, it’s a solid use of your time.
