The Guard (2011)
When a small-town Irish cop with a crass personality is partnered with a straight-laced FBI agent to bust an international drug-trafficking ring, they must settle their differences in order to take down a dangerous gang.
What people think about The Guard
What makes The Guard special is how it turns the familiar buddy-cop setup into something bracingly original: a wickedly funny, darkly human Irish crime tale where the jokes land because the danger feels real. Brendan Gleeson gives a towering performance as a cop who’s equal parts shameless and strangely principled, and watching him spar with Don Cheadle’s controlled, no-nonsense FBI agent creates a crackling rhythm that never settles into cliché. John Michael McDonagh’s writing is sharp enough to slice—profane, observant, and unexpectedly tender—so the film can make you laugh and then, a beat later, remind you what’s at stake. It’s definitely not for everyone given the rough language and morally messy behavior, but if you like your thrillers seasoned with bite, swagger, and a streak of soul, this one’s a treat.
The Guard is trying to mash up a grimy crime thriller with a very Irish, very deadpan buddy-comedy, and it mostly lives or dies on whether you click with its sensibility. Brendan Gleeson is the main event—charismatic, sharp, and strangely soulful beneath the filth—but the film’s pacing can feel shaggy, with stretches where the plot ambles while the jokes and local color take the wheel. Some of the humor is intentionally abrasive and culturally specific, so if you’re not on its wavelength, it can come off as smug or uneven rather than clever. If you want a tight, propulsive action-crime ride or a conventional crowd-pleasing buddy cop dynamic, this may frustrate you; if you can tolerate rough edges for a distinctive voice and a great lead performance, it’s worth a look.
