W.E. is a swooning, jewel-box romance that treats history less like a textbook and more like a fever dream of longing, image, and consequence—an old-world love story refracted through a modern woman’s hunger for escape. Madonna directs with a painter’s eye, letting lavish costumes, artful interiors, and Abel Korzeniowski’s aching score do as much storytelling as the dialogue, while Andrea Riseborough brings unexpected steel and vulnerability to Wallis Simpson. The film’s vibe is glossy and intimate at once, moving between eras with the rhythm of obsession, and it’s at its best when it asks what we project onto famous romances versus what they actually cost. It isn’t for viewers who want a strict, procedural history lesson, and it does touch on domestic abuse and other mature material, but if you’re on the fence and crave a sensual, emotionally curious drama, this one is easy to sink into.

W.E. is clearly trying to be a glossy, parallel love-story meditation on obsession, sacrifice, and a woman finding the nerve to leave a damaging marriage, with Madonna aiming for old-Hollywood sweep and modern empowerment in the same breath. The problem is the film often mistakes expensive-looking style for emotional weight: the writing and dialogue can feel thin, the present-day storyline drags, and the performances don’t always sell the big romantic and psychological swings. If you want a sharp, insightful historical drama or a convincingly raw contemporary romance, this may leave you cold—especially given the domestic abuse content that the movie treats more as plot fuel than lived experience. Still, if you’re in the mood for lush costumes, curated mood, and a pop-star director’s very personal fixation on the Windsors, there’s enough visual polish to make it a passable, if frustrating, watch.
