Champions (2023)

Champions earns its title the old-fashioned way: by making you laugh, then quietly winning your heart when you least expect it. Bobby Farrelly keeps the tone bright and crowd-pleasing without turning the characters into lessons, and Woody Harrelson’s prickly coach is funny precisely because the movie lets him be flawed before he learns to show up for others. The real joy, though, is The Friends themselves—an ensemble with genuine chemistry that turns every practice, argument, and small victory into something disarmingly human. It does lean on familiar sports-movie beats and it’s got some rough language and adult jokes, so it’s not for everyone, but if you’re on the fence, this is the kind of warm, charming feel-good comedy-drama that leaves you glad you pressed play.

Champions is clearly trying to be a big-hearted redemption comedy that treats its Special Olympics team with warmth and lets a rough-around-the-edges coach learn some humility. The problem is it follows a very familiar “jerk learns a lesson” sports template so closely that you can predict most beats from a mile away, and some scenes land a bit awkwardly rather than naturally funny or moving. Woody Harrelson is likable enough to carry it, and the team has genuine charm that earns a few smiles, but if you’re hoping for a fresh take or subtle storytelling, this may feel like a well-meaning rerun. If you enjoy comfort-food crowd-pleasers with an obvious emotional arc and don’t mind some crude humor and strong language, it’ll probably do the job; if you’re allergic to formula, skip it.
