Mike Mills frames Oliver’s new romance with Anna as a gentle, funny, occasionally aching ripple effect of his father Hal’s late-blooming decision to live openly, and the film’s tone feels like a handwritten letter: intimate, wry, and unexpectedly buoyant even when it’s talking about loss. Ewan McGregor gives Oliver a guarded tenderness that slowly unknots, while Christopher Plummer is quietly electric as Hal, making his last years feel less like an epilogue than a beginning.
