Daddy's Home (2015)

Daddy’s Home is a surprisingly warm, crowd-pleasing comedy built on one irresistible idea: watching Will Ferrell’s anxious, eager-to-please stepdad collide with Mark Wahlberg’s swaggering “cool dad” like two mismatched bumper cars, each convinced the kids’ love is a prize to be won. The movie’s secret weapon is their comic chemistry—Ferrell’s flustered sincerity and Wahlberg’s smooth confidence keep the rivalry funny even as it escalates into gloriously silly, big-studio slapstick. Beneath the jokes, there’s a feel-good undercurrent about family, pride, and what being a dad actually means, without ever turning into a lecture. It’s not for everyone if you’re allergic to broad humor and PG-13 raunch, but if you want an easy, watchable laugh with a generous heart, it delivers.

Daddy’s Home is clearly aiming for a broad, crowd-pleasing dad-comedy about insecurity, blended families, and two very different men learning to share the “father” role. The problem is it leans hard on repetitive one-upmanship and humiliation gags, so the rivalry can feel more unpleasant than clever, like you’re watching someone get dunked on for two hours and being told to laugh. If you enjoy Will Ferrell’s cringe-heavy spirals and Mark Wahlberg playing cool alpha foil, there are some energetic set pieces and a few solid bits, plus Linda Cardellini brings warmth that the script sometimes forgets. But if mean-spirited competition, secondhand embarrassment, and recycled comedy beats wear you out, this one will likely feel more exhausting than funny.
