Raven's Hollow (2022)

Raven’s Hollow is the kind of gothic chiller that wins you over with mood before it ever asks you to believe in its darkness: candlelit interiors, damp autumn woods, and a sense that every polite smile in town is hiding a threat. The hook is deliciously literary—Edgar Allan Poe as a young cadet stumbling into a mystery that feels like it’s writing him as much as he’s solving it—and William Moseley gives him an earnest, curious edge that keeps the story grounded while the dread creeps in. Christopher Hatton leans into old-fashioned intrigue, letting secrets accumulate and visuals do a lot of the whispering, so the film plays like a period whodunit that keeps slipping toward nightmare. Fair warning: the violence is not shy and the intensity runs high, but if you’re in the mood for a handsome, Poe-flavored horror mystery that prioritizes atmosphere and mounting unease, this is an easy ticket to punch.

Raven’s Hollow clearly wants to be a moody, Poe-adjacent gothic mystery with a creature-feature payoff, and the premise is genuinely enticing. Unfortunately, the execution wobbles: choppy editing, uneven effects, and a story that teases bigger revelations than it can convincingly deliver, building to an ending many will find more silly than satisfying. The lead performance can also feel like it’s in a slightly different movie, which makes it harder to buy into the tension. If you’re here for polished scares or a tight, clever mystery, you may leave annoyed—but if you can forgive rough edges for foggy atmosphere, period vibes, and some nasty gore, it might still scratch the late-night curiosity itch.
