Contraband is aiming for a gritty, blue-collar smuggling thriller where a decent family man gets dragged back into a life he swore off, and it does deliver a steady stream of jeopardy, chases, and ticking-clock problems. The issue is it often feels like a checklist of crime-movie beats rather than a story with characters you truly get under the skin of, so the tension can come off mechanical instead of nerve-racking. A few twists push past “bad luck” into “come on now,” which may test your patience if you like your thrillers grounded.
