The Hand (2021)

The Hand is Wong Kar-wai in miniature and at full strength: a lush, aching reverie where desire is stitched into every glance, every fabric choice, every pause that says more than dialogue ever could. Set in 1960s Hong Kong, it turns a charged first encounter between a proud courtesan (a magnificent Gong Li) and a shy tailor’s assistant (Chang Chen, all quiet longing) into a slow-burn study of memory, power, and the particular heartbreak of wanting someone you can’t quite reach. The film’s sensuality isn’t there for shock; it’s part of the atmosphere, as tactile and intoxicating as the silks and cigarette smoke that Wong frames with painterly beauty. If you need plot-heavy momentum, it may feel more like a mood than a story—but if you’re willing to surrender to its elegant melancholy, it’s the kind of romance that lingers on the skin.

The Hand is Wong Kar-wai aiming for a hushed, sensual character study about longing, power, and class—told more through glances, fabrics, and time passing than through plot. If you’re expecting a conventional romance or clear emotional payoffs, this will feel slow, elliptical, and deliberately distant, with characters who don’t explain themselves and a story that seems to drift rather than build. The sexual premise is frank and psychologically charged, so if that dynamic (and the imbalance within it) makes you uncomfortable, it’s not going to soften into something cute or reassuring. That said, Gong Li and Chang Chen bring real ache to the restraint, and the period mood is immaculate—just don’t come looking for fireworks when the film is intentionally a smolder.
